How To Look After Your Sex Toys
It’s fun to get a little dirty from time to time, and introducing sex toys is a great way to add a little bit of sparkle back into the bedroom. But it’s important to take good care of your box of tricks and keep all your toys clean and dry if you want them to last and prevent nasty infections. Here are a few golden rules to follow when it comes to sex toy care:
1) Wash in warm, soapy water.
All sex toys are not created equal; today they come in all shapes, sizes, colours and materials. The easiest to take care of are the silicone variety, which are non-porous and smooth, making it simpler to get into all the nooks and crannies. There are plenty of specifically designed cleaning products available, but if you don’t have any to hand an antibacterial soap will do the trick. Get the water hand-hot; warm enough to wash away any germs but not so hot that it could cause damage, then thoroughly dry with a fresh, clean towel. Clean after every use to keep in tip-top condition and prevent any bacteria from warm, dark places from festering.
2) It’s not just about vibrators!
All sex toys, dressing up clothes and items like paddles and restraints should all be regularly washed or wiped down with appropriate cleaning products or anti bacterial wipes (leather items will need special care to stay looking and feeling their best.) If they’re being used correctly and having the desired effect, they will almost certainly pick up some body fluid with each use so will need to be cleaned just as regularly as any of your battery powered friends.
3) Discard any old batteries.
Running out of power when you need it the most is one of the most frustrating experiences any hot blooded toy lover can have, so keep on top of the battery drawer and dispose of any old batteries in special recycling bins. Most If you spot any leakages, dispose of the whole thing (discreetly if you want to avoid funny looks from the bin man) and invest in a new shiny friend.
4) Never, ever go from back to front.
Part of any great sex life is getting to know each other’s most private places and anal sex is more common than you may think, with around a third of straight couples engaging in bum fun. But if you are going to partake, it’s important to understand that if you go from back to front you will transfer bacteria into the vagina which can lead to nasty infections such as bacterial vaginosis and pelvic inflammatory disease. If left untreated infections like this are not only inconvenient and embarrassing, they can lead to long term health complications so it’s essential to treat these sensitive areas with respect.
5) If you notice any cracks or tears, get rid.
Germs thrive in small places and it’s really hard to give scratches and cracks a proper clean- so see broken toys as a great opportunity to invest in some new ones.
Most sex toy manufacturers sell a range of cleaning products that have been specially designed to look after your most intimate places and keep your toys in tip top condition. Keep them clean and let your imagination run wild.
